Thread and Matter are not the same thing
These get conflated constantly. Thread is the low-power mesh radio protocol (similar in role to Zigbee); Matter is the application-layer standard that runs on top of Thread, Wi-Fi, or Ethernet, defining how devices describe themselves and get controlled. A device can support Thread without supporting Matter, and Matter doesn’t require Thread specifically. When a box says “Matter over Thread,” that’s the combination most relevant to a local Home Assistant setup.
Where Matter still falls short in 2026
The promise is one device working identically across ecosystems. The reality has rough edges: fabric fragmentation means a Matter device is often only fully commissioned into one controller’s “fabric” at a time, and multi-admin support (the same device visible and controllable from Home Assistant and another app simultaneously) is inconsistent between manufacturers.
